What is TMJ Chiropractic Care?
TMJ Chiropractic Care differs from standard chiropractic care. TMJ focused chiropractors have typically received advanced training in the areas of the TMJ, airways, occlusion and orofacial function. TMJ Chiropractic Care focuses on jaw function with the consideration of how the TMJ is connected to spinal function, as well as other areas that may significantly impact the jaw such as airway obstruction, oral ties, orofacial function and malocclusion.
Your First TMJ Chiropractic Visit
Your TMJ Chiropractic initial consultation is 60 minutes. During this time Dr. Clarke will go through the details of your jaw symptoms and concerns, discuss your relevant history and previous scan results.
Assessment will then be conducted, including:
TMJ biomechanical assessment
TMJ range of motion measurements
Posture and facial symmetry
Intr-oral assessment of the tonsils, soft palate, hard palate and tongue.
Occlusion
Orofacial Myofunctional assessment
Airways and breathing
Cervical spinal function
Jaw and cervical spine muscular assessment
Where indicated, otoscopic, neurological and hypermobility examinations.
Depending on presentation and complexity of the complaint, limited treatment may be provided during your first consult. Dr. Clarke will then spend time after your consultation developing a detailed report and proposed treatment plan.
Your Second Visit - Report of Findings
Your report of findings visit is 45 minutes. During this time Dr. Clarke will discuss your examination findings and go through your report with you. Your proposed treatment plan will be outlined and a discussion with you will determine what treatment takes place, depending on what you are comfortable with.
In most cases, part of the treatment will be exercises to be completed at home. These will be demonstrated within the visit to ensure they are performed correctly and any myofunctional tools required will be provided.
You will receive treatment within your consult.
This is a great time to ask any questions you may have, however, sometimes your questions come after the report visit. You are encouraged to bring up any questions during subsequent visits or e-mailing us anytime.
Standard Consultations
Standard subsequent visits are usually 30 minutes, particularly in the early stages of care. During your visits, your progress is monitored by examination and measurements, and your treatment adjusted accordingly.
Later in care, depending on complexity and scope of treatment, your visits may reduce to a short 15 minute consult
